As we commemorate 2015’s World environment day, let us recognize the integral part we play in utilizing and protecting our surrounding. For decades, constant deforestation, carbon emission, grazing, use of chemicals, mining and use of pollutants have a brought immense pressure to Mother Nature, bringing ecosystems to the verge of collapse as their capacities to sustain life degrades. There are increasing cases of health issues such chronic lung diseases, heart diseases and water borne diseases and death which are related to environmental issues. This coupled with evident global warming and current alarming rates of species extinction (1000 times faster than their natural rate); (World Centric) its time humans do something before it’s too late.
We, are occupants of earth, have a great role to play in enhancing its sustainability. This can be achieved through small individual steps which collectively, contribute enormously to environmental protection. Some of these are;
- Reforestation – planting trees will restore the earth’s capacity to reabsorb greenhouse gases, which are on the rise due to increase use of fossil fuels. Greenhouse gases are amongst the many contributors to global warming (gradual increase in earth’s temperature) which has adverse effects that include rising sea levels, increased precipitation, drought, storms, extinction or reduction in numbers of species, diseases such as malaria and change of ecosystems. (National geographic) it’s also essential to discourage deforestation as these efforts are undertaken.
- Recycle as much as you, separate biodegradable items from the recyclable (non-biodegradable) items. Reuse these items appropriately (For more)
- Take public transportation, use a hybrid car and/or ensure that your car is in perfect form to reduce carbon emissions.
- Opt for more environmentally friendly bulbs such as compact florescent and LED bulbs. Also, opt for energy efficient appliances and those with longer lifespans. Turn off this bulbs and other electric switches and appliances when not in use. Always keep in mind the values of natural lighting and solar electricity.
- Avoid using harsh chemicals at home or at work. In case you interact with such, choose eco-friendly options and dispose them conveniently; in a manner that won’t harm any ecosystem.
- Participate and/or dedicate your time and that of your family to conservation efforts. Whenever possible, volunteer your efforts and resources towards this noble cause.
